LOVING WILDFLOWERS. That’s what the past twenty-two years has been. Our friend and realtor Louise Judd showed us the elegant home that became our Bed and Breakfast at 10:00 a.m. on a mild spring morning in 1972. We bought it at 11:00, and from there we welcomed the world to its various charms. We hosted guests from across the globe. Guests at the breakfast table might hail from London, from Ashton, from Milwaukee. They mingled in the most heartening ways. The conversations pointed to a world of connection and compassion.
Mothers and fathers came to celebrate their children’s marriages, the births of grandchildren, graduations, weddings. We stood watch over the sweep of life.
David Kranes brought the film magnates that went on to launch the Sundance Film Festival. KUER brought its luminaries and hosted retreats in the spacious rooms of the third floor. One of them, Lynne Rosetto Kasper, became a friend and then a partner in offering culinary retreats. Other notables came—Jane Goodall, a Nobel Prize winner from Africa whose name was hard to spell and so we lost track of it. As we set forth bread and board for the rich and varied face of humanity, we were charmed. Our own lives expanded.
On the home front, we were part of a community we were proud of. We valued our place in it. We liked being part of its cosmopolitan side.
And we loved being allied with an ancient profession—innkeepers who proffered food and rest. Now we’ll keep our memories as we place the keys to Wildflowers in other hands and pursue other dreams.
Thank you to all who supported us, inspired us, sustained us. We’ll be seeing you on other trails.
